Travel industry fears damage from a long government shutdown

Jan 19, 2019

America's busiest airport, Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International, is a blur of activity on the best of days. But an extra layer of anxiety gripped the airport Friday, the eve of a three-day holiday weekend. The partial government shutdown — the longest ever — has thinned the ranks of federal workers who staff airport security lines. And some travelers had braced for the worst. "I have a 3 o'clock flight, and I arrived at 10:15 a.m.," Beth Lambert said while waiting to check in at a Delta Air Lines counter as her 5-year-old, Michael, rode around on his wheeled bag like a...

Jan 19, 2019

AGUA CALIENTE, Guatemala — More than 1,700 Hondurans were walking and hitchhiking through Guatemala on Wednesday, heading toward the Mexico border as part of a new caravan of migrants hoping to reach the United States. Over 1,700 migrants passed through the Agua Caliente border crossing under the watchful eyes of about 200 police and soldiers. Some migrants told The Associated Press that they crossed informally elsewhere. Guatemala's National Immigration Institute said there were 325 children or youths under 18 in the caravan. There were also just over 100 people from El Salvador. Miria Zelaya, who left the Honduran city of...

Death penalty for Canadian escalates China-Canada tensions

Jan 19, 2019

TORONTO — A Chinese court sentenced a Canadian to death in a sudden retrial of his drug smuggling case, while another Canadian man has been denied diplomatic immunity, ratcheting up the tensions following Canada's arrest of a top Chinese technology executive last month. The Liaoning provincial court in northeastern China announced the death sentence for Robert Lloyd Schellenberg on Monday, reversing a 15-year prison term from a November 2018 sentencing. Schellenberg first went on trial in 2016. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau strongly condemned Monday's proceeding, suggesting that China was using its judicial system to pressure Canada over the arrest...

The Latest: Canada updates travel advisory to Canada

Jan 19, 2019

BEIJING — The latest on a death sentence imposed by a Chinese court on a Canadian citizen (all times local): 8:10 a.m. Canada has updated its travel advisory for China to warn Canadians of "the risk of arbitrary enforcement of local laws." The move comes after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressed extreme concern over a court in China imposing the death penalty on a Canadian. A Chinese court announced Monday that it had given Robert Lloyd Schellenberg of Canada the death penalty on drug charges. The Chinese press began publicizing Schellenberg's case after Canada detained the chief financial officer of...
